The Importance of Mental Health in 2025
In 2025, mental health continues to be a significant global concern, with increasing awareness and a growing demand for accessible and effective solutions. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year. With such a high percentage of people affected, it’s more important than ever to ensure access to care and support—right here in communities like Daniel Island and Charleston.
Medicare Coverage for Mental Health Care
If you have a Medicare plan, you’re covered for a wide range of behavioral health services, including inpatient, outpatient, and telehealth services.
Medicare Part A: Inpatient Services
Medicare Part A is your hospital insurance. This coverage applies if you’re admitted as an inpatient to a general hospital or a psychiatric hospital. It includes care such as semi-private rooms, general nursing, meals, medications, and other related hospital supplies or services during your stay. Part A covers up to 190 days of inpatient psychiatric hospital services during your lifetime, so it’s important to monitor your stay length to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs beyond that limit.
Medicare Part B: Outpatient Services
Medicare Part B is your medical insurance, which helps pay for services received outside of a hospital or on an outpatient basis. These may include intensive outpatient program services, services through a community mental health center, office visits with psychiatrists or other providers, substance use disorder treatment, and behavioral health integration services to help manage your overall care.
Part B also helps cover opioid use disorder treatment through certified treatment programs, including counseling, group therapy, drug testing, and periodic assessments. Additionally, Medicare covers one alcohol misuse screening per year for adults who consume alcohol but do not meet the criteria for alcohol dependence.
Medicare Part D: Prescription Medications
Medicare Part D helps cover prescription medications you may need for mental health treatment. Medicare drug plans are required to cover nearly all antidepressants and antipsychotics, though the exact formulary can vary by plan.
Medicare and Telehealth Services
Medicare also covers telehealth services for mental health care, including therapy, psychiatric evaluations, consultations, and other behavioral health services. Starting October 1, 2025, for most telehealth services, you must be in a medical facility or office located in a rural area. There are some exceptions, so it’s wise to confirm your eligibility before relying on telehealth as your primary method of care.
